Along with beignets, the po-boy is a quintessential foodie item one must experience while in the Big Easy. I received several recommendations of where to go. Based on timing (days and times that locations were open during our visit) we ended up choosing Domilise’s Po-Boy. They are known for their legendary fried oyster po-boy and so that’s what we ordered to share back at the hotel later in the day. This little sandwich shop was packed with customers and had the sweetest staff. Sandwiches are made to order, and we perched ourselves at the bar to watch them piece together each sandwich with meticulous attention to the details of the order. The shrimp po-boys looked awesome, but our appetites couldn’t handle more than to share one large sandwich. We felt validated ordering the fried oyster as the cook kept popping a fried oyster in their mouth here and there. Be warned, the roast beef and shrimp po-boys are reasonably priced around $12, but the fried oyster po-boy was $20. I’m told oyster prices skyrocketed, but the sandwich was worth it. We had a bit of wait—this is no fast food joint—but it was pleasant to have a seat and take in the process. The walls are adorned with photo collages and newspaper clippings of Domilise’s success. Photos with famous patrons—the Mannings, especially Peyton Manning features prominently—tell the story of this shop.
