NYC Guide: August Gatherings
Address | 266 Canal St, New York, NY 10013
I asked my trusted friend, Chef, and restauranteur what his favorite spot for Chinese cuisine is in the city and without hesitation he suggested August Gatherings in Chinatown. Anticipating a delicious meal, we made our way to Canal Street and ducked under the signature green overhang into August Gatherings. The service was friendly and attentive and the steaming plates of whole fish, duck, and dim sum definitely gave me big eyes when choosing from the menu. August Gatherings is an upscale dining experience with lobster and truffles among other excellent ingredients and items on the menu.
We started our dinner with Grey Goose dirty martinis and the balance was perfect. Living in the Hamptons access to excellent Chinese cuisine is really limited so as our courses came out I really relished every bite into perfect pillows of steamed shrimp dumplings, brown sugar duck thigh, and pulling lobster meat from it’s shell for the perfect bite of lobster and Chencun noodle. The crisp crunch of Chinese broccoli with the smooth and salty taste of olive oil and soy sauce combined, made a great side dish. We also enjoyed whole fish. The meal was large and satisfying but I had had my eye on dessert and we weren’t leaving without it. On the menu are egg tarts—similar to pastéis de nata which I fell in love with in Portugal—and I had to give them a try. Paired with Jasmine green tea, it was a delicious end to a very satisfying meal.
