Clash of the Cookbooks on Roku December 6
I’m beyond thrilled to share some exciting news with you all — I’ll be appearing on Clash of the Cookbooks, a brand-new show that’s set to air this Friday on December 6, 2024! This incredible competition brings together talented chefs from across the country to take on one of the most unique and challenging cooking formats: recreating iconic, historically significant recipes from some of the toughest cookbooks in culinary history.
Hosted by the dynamic Phoebe Robinson and the charismatic food historian Max Miller, Clash of the Cookbooks is no ordinary cooking competition. Max Miller is the the creator of the popular YouTube channel Tasting History. Known for his engaging storytelling and culinary expertise, Miller explores historical recipes, bringing ancient and obscure dishes to life with a modern twist. On his channel, he combines cooking demonstrations with fascinating historical anecdotes, offering viewers a unique blend of entertainment and education. From ancient Roman feasts to medieval banquets, Miller’s deep dives into food history have earned him a devoted following, celebrating his passion for exploring how food connects us to the past.
Clash of the Cookbooks is a thrilling deep dive into the art of culinary storytelling, where each episode celebrates history, culture, and, of course, the timeless art of cooking. The premise of the show is simple yet intense: chefs are tasked with re-creating opulent, sometimes forgotten recipes from the pages of the world’s most challenging and prestigious cookbooks, spanning centuries of culinary evolution.
In my episode, Season 1, Episode 1 — titled First Class Fare — we delve into the opulent world of the Titanic’s fateful voyage over 100 years ago. Imagine being tasked with re-creating meals for the wealthiest passengers aboard the ship, where the dining experiences were as lavish and luxurious as the journey itself. It’s an exciting challenge that takes us all the way back to the early 20th century, exploring the menus and recipes that were served in the Titanic’s First Class dining rooms. The foods are rich, elegant, and more complicated than you might think, and we had to navigate through the history and the meticulousness of it all while working under intense time constraints.
For the Clash of the Cookbooks team, bringing the Titanic’s First Class Fare back to life was an exercise in both culinary precision and creativity. Each recipe in the Titanic cookbook isn’t just about making a meal; it’s about recreating history. These were dishes meant to impress, to showcase wealth and sophistication, and to provide an experience unlike any other. The kitchen became our own version of the Titanic’s galley, where the pressure was on to get everything just right.
But that’s not all! Clash of the Cookbooks also pushes us to expand our culinary horizons by challenging us to tackle a modern-day cookbook, and in my episode, that cookbook comes from the elegant and flavorful world of Moroccan cuisine. Moroccan food is known for its incredible blend of spices, textures, and vibrant flavors that combine tradition with a contemporary flair. For this part of the challenge, we were tasked with preparing dishes that embody the spirit of Morocco — dishes that are as beautiful to look at as they are to eat.
The show has been an incredible experience, full of high stakes and creative cooking. Working alongside some of the country’s top chefs has been both humbling and inspiring. We pushed each other to think outside the box and experiment with ingredients, flavors, and techniques that we might not have considered otherwise. And while the pressure in the kitchen was intense, it was also a joy to collaborate with such talented individuals who share a passion for food, history, and the art of cooking. Each challenge tested our ability to think on our feet, adapt quickly, and execute with precision — all while dealing with the unique quirks and demands of the historical recipes.
What really set Clash of the Cookbooks apart, though, is the amazing combination of fun, competition, and storytelling. Phoebe Robinson and Max Miller brought such a great energy to the show, blending humor with insight as they guided us through each round of the competition. Their wit and chemistry really helped to keep things light and entertaining, even as the heat in the kitchen was on.
I can’t wait for you all to see the episode! It was an absolute thrill to be part of this exciting new show, and I’m proud of the work we did on set. From re-creating luxurious meals that once graced the tables of the Titanic to exploring the rich, complex flavors of Moroccan cuisine, the show promises to be a rollercoaster of emotions and flavors.
