As the early morning sun rose over New Orleans ushering in the first day of 2025, we packed up the car and headed to our next destination, Gulf Shores Alabama. I wanted to take advantage of a warm January day spent on the golf course and it made a good destination for R&R as we headed back up towards Nashville.

As we pulled in to the large estate we were immediately greeted and assisted with bags, and directions to the check in. The hotel staff offered to pick up from our suite to take me to the golf course for my reservation via golf cart, the convenience of which was very much appreciated. Our room was spacious and inviting, with a classic Southern charm that immediately made me feel at home. The elegant furnishings and soft, neutral tones were both sophisticated and cozy. One of my favorite features was the Juliet balcony, which offered a stunning view of the marina. Standing there, I could see the sailboats gently swaying in the breeze, their masts reflecting in the calm waters. It was the perfect spot to sip my coffee in the morning or enjoy a quiet moment in the evening, fully immersed in the tranquil beauty of this charming Southern retreat.

During the Civil War, it served as a Confederate hospital, and in World War II, it became a training site for U.S. Army Air Corps pilots. Over the decades, the Grand Hotel has evolved, undergoing thoughtful renovations to preserve its historic charm while incorporating modern luxuries. Designated a Historic Hotel of America, the resort continues to honor its legacy with daily traditions like the cannon firing at sunset, paying tribute to its rich past while welcoming guests to create their own memorable experiences.
In the evening we decided to take a long stroll around the property. The gentle sea breeze carried the salty scent of the ocean, and the rhythmic lapping of the waves provided a soothing soundtrack to our walk. The manicured lawns stretched toward the beach, dotted with families and friends laughing together over mini golf, bean bag toss, and croquet. The scene was vibrant yet peaceful, a perfect balance of activity and serenity. We eventually found our way to the outdoor fire pits—several cozy fires surrounded by inviting seating. Settling in, we ordered evening cocktails, their flavors enhanced by the crisp air and the magic of the moment. The setting sun painted the sky with hues of gold and pink, a breathtaking canvas to mark the first evening of the new year, fully soaking in the beauty and tranquility of this extraordinary place.
The morning began with a feast for both the eyes and the palate as we indulged in the Grand Hotel's renowned breakfast buffet. The bright dining room, bathed in natural light, offered stunning views of the beach, where gentle waves glistened in the morning sun. The buffet was a delight, featuring smoked salmon with all the traditional accoutrements, made-to-order omelets, sugar-crusted waffles, buttery croissants, perfect fresh berries, creamy grits, and more. Every bite felt like a treat. As we savored our meal, our warm and attentive server suggested we grab a couple of their large, house-made muffins for the road. We selected the blueberry and a banana nut muffin which she thoughtfully packaged, along with two steaming cups of coffee, ensuring we had a delicious start to our travels after such a memorable breakfast experience.
After breakfast, we decided to take a leisurely walk around the pond, soaking in the beauty of the morning. The sun shone brightly, casting a golden glow over the water, where ripples danced gently in the breeze. Birds sang melodious tunes from the trees, their songs harmonizing with the peaceful surroundings. The air was fragrant with the scent of flowers in full bloom, their vibrant colors creating a picture-perfect landscape. We strolled hand in hand, pausing occasionally to admire the scenery and enjoy the serenity of the moment—a perfect way to embrace the calm and beauty of the day ahead.
