Mama's Too! in the West Village is the second location of the popular pizzeria originally based on the Upper West Side. Founded by Frank Tuttolomondo, who comes from a family of pizzaiolos, the new location continues the tradition of serving top-notch pizza with a unique twist. The West Village spot, is slightly larger than the original, featuring a shiny tin ceiling and a few more tables. The menu includes their famous square slices, which are known for their light and crunchy texture, topped with ingredients like vodka sauce, whipped ricotta, and Calabrian chili. Popular items include the Pepperoni Square, Cacio e Pepe Square, and Funghi slices.
On a recent visit I tried a couple of slices. First, I had the house slice. This was nothing to write home about but tasty with a decent crust. The sauce was a little a sweeter than I prefer. It’s definitely a good slice, but not in my top 5 NYC slices. The square slice was much better—and not surprising since this is what they are known for. I tried the cacio e pepe it had a nice crisp bottom crust, not doughy, and the toppings were tasty.
In addition to pizza, Mama's Too! offers sandwich specials on sesame-speckled semolina bread. Expect fillings like chicken in vodka sauce or porchetta with bitter greens. I was too full on this visit to try their sandwiches but a return for that menu item is on my list.
