Brunch: French Toast Recipe

Brunch: French Toast Recipe

One of my family favorite big breakfast items is simple French Toast.  There are a lot of great
ways to kick up your French Toast. It can be stuffed with ricotta cheese, different fruits or nuts.  When it comes to this breakfast food, I am a fan of keeping it simple and classic. My secret is to pull out the right amount of flavor that each ingredient brings and then to cook it well with lots of butter! Butter really is the big secret to perfect and simple French Toast. Also getting the coating on the bread just right.  No one wants a lightly battered piece of French Toast.  It comes out dry and unremarkable. So, keep it tasty and exciting! Below is my recipe for simple French Toast.

French Toast Recipe

  • Thickly Sliced Brioche (1-2 inches thick)

  • 1 and 1/2 cups of almond milk (you can also use whole milk or whatever milk you prefer)

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/2 Teaspoon Cinnamon

  • 2 Tablespoons of Flour

  • 1 Teaspoon Salt

  • 3 Tablespoons Sugar

  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

  • 3 Tablespoons of melted butter

    French Toast Instructions

  • First combine all dry ingredients into large mixing bowl using a whisk

  • Slowly whisk in milk and vanilla extract

  • Beat in eggs

  • Drizzle in melted butter while whisking to distribute (Tip: if it's too cold and you're not whisking the butter will congeal)

  • After all ingredients are combined let the batter rest in the
    refrigerator for 10 minutes

  • Place a large skillet (enough to fit 2-3 pieces of toast at a
    time) on medium high heat

  • melt butter in skillet (about a tablespoon per side)

Tip: make sure to rewhisk your batter to distribute the cinnamon which may have floated to the top

  • While butter melts soak your bread in French Toast batter on each side for about 4 seconds per side to make sure it is nicely coated. You can feel how saturated the bread is with your fingers.  The dryer your bread the faster it will absorb the liquid

  • Lay toast on skillet, butter should be slightly brown

  • Lower heat to medium to allow the toast to cook through the center

  • When you flip the toast add another tablespoon (or more) of butter

  • Cook on each side until golden brown

  • To check doneness cut toast down the middle

  • Plate and serve with your favorite toppings. Maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, whatever you desire
