New Orleans Guide: St. Charles Streetcar

New Orleans Guide: St. Charles Streetcar

St. Charles Streetcar

When planning to head to New Orleans’ Garden District, our friends urged us to take the St. Charles Streetcar from the French Quarter up. For $1.25 (or you can purchase a $3 ticket to ride anytime for a 24 hour period) you can ride this oldest continuously operating streetcar line not only in the United States, but in the world. Running since 1835, stepping up to board the iconic dark green streetcars, with idyllic push-up windows, itself is an experience that feels like a little step back in time. The ride is really scenic with the tracks running along a path lined with trees and lush green plants.

Once on board you’ll notice the switchback wooden seats. Initially we sat across from each other for conversation and access to the cool breeze from the windows. Then we sat side by side. Closer is better for a romantic ride!

We disembarked at the Garden District neighborhood for a little self-guided walking tour. At the end of the day we opted to ride the St. Charles streetcar back to the French Quarter en route to our hotel. It was a beautiful way to end our tour of the area.
