New Orleans Guide: Turkey and the Wolf

Turkey and the Wolf

Address | 739 Jackson Ave, New Orleans, LA 70130

When consulting with my network of Chef buddies on where to eat while in New Orleans, one place consistently came up, Mason Hereford’s Turkey and the Wolf. Named America’s Best New Restaurant 2017 by Bon Appetit I knew we had to give this place a try. After spending the first half of the day sipping cold brew and touring the Garden District, we headed to the less manicured but more lively, Lower Garden District to sink out teeth into Turkey and the Wolf’s famed sandwiches. Having stopped into the Garden District Book Shop (which has the friendliest and best staff) we came across Turkey and the Wolf’s cookbook and the photos properly tantalized our growing appetites.

Upon arrival there was a line out the door (it’s a small shop but the customer stream was never ending). My wife snagged us an outdoor table while I placed our order. They do serve cocktails but the day was incredibly hot and we were largely venturing out on foot, so we stuck with H20. The menu has a lot of really tempting options. We decided to try two vegetarian sandwiches which were served on mismatched vintage McDonald’s plates.

Vegan Chik’n Sandwich

incogmeato chik’n tenders, vegan honey mustard, shrettuce, onion, dill, hot sauce and pickles on a bun

This sandwich was really tasty. The honey mustard was the star ingredient and the incogmeato Chik’n tenders are tasty.

The Collard Green Melt

slow cooked collards, swiss cheese, pickled cherry pepper dressing, coleslaw, on rye bread, served hot

The collard green melt was really the star sandwich. The collard greens had a texture and taste that was unforgettable and perfectly played off the flavors of the other ingredients of the sandwich.

Merch! When you step inside there’s a lot of fun eclectic merch. My wife disappeared at one point and reappeared with the gift of sun protection and the stamp of “I was here” to take home.
