Portugal Guide: VOLTARIA - Petisqueira Portuguesa Porto
VOLTARIA - Petisqueira Portuguesa Porto
Address | R. Afonso Martins Alho 109, Porto, Portugal
I was taken with the charm of the location of our apartment in Porto and was happy to find that the quaint tapas restaurant next door, Voltaire, had excellent reviews and ratings. Following a morning tour of Porto, we headed to Voltaire to enjoy lunch. Though we arrived shortly after opening, there was already a line out the door. The space is small with limited indoor seating, but you’ll find that the menu is worth the wait.
We had unique and tasty starters. The bite sized Tuna Profiterole with tuna pate and spicy pineapple jam was an all around favorite. It was like an elevated tuna sandwich. While in Portugal we certainly had our share of Codfish cakes the codfish cake a Voltaria was a bit different, oven baked with corn bread. It was crisp and tasty. We also enjoyed a savory take on the pastel da nata with the Codfish Pastel da Nata which consisted of codfish and cream filling.
We were on the fence about trying the popular Portuguese dish the Francesinha but my son and I decided we had to have it at least once. The Francesinha is made with bologna ham, fresh sausage, smoked sausage, and beefsteak between two slices of bread topped with cheese and a lovely spicy sauce. It was tasty. I really like the sauce but I think one time has satisfied my curiousity!
As you will see with my Portugal dining recommendations, I tried a lot of delicious octopus dishes. Voltaria served an excellent Octopus a Largareiro baked in the oven with potatoes and olive oil. The taste and texture impressed our whole dining party. We also enjoyed the simplicity and freshness of the Codfish and Shrimp rice.
When you find yourself in Porto, head over to Voltaria a bit before opening and enjoy fresh and tasty Portuguese tapas.
