Iconic NYC: Dowling's at the Carlyle

Dowling’s at the Carlyle

Address | 35 E 76th St, New York, NY 10021

Dowling's at the Carlyle is a sophisticated restaurant located in The Carlyle, a historic luxury hotel in New York City. Named after the iconic illustrator René Robert Bouché's fictional socialite, Dudu Dowling, the restaurant reflects a blend of classic and contemporary elegance. The restaurant offers a menu that emphasizes American cuisine with European influences, featuring a selection of updated classics and seasonal dishes. Signature offerings include everything from steaks to fresh seafood, with a focus on high-quality ingredients and refined presentation.

Dowling's decor is an homage to the Old New York charm, with an intimate, plush dining room that exudes an air of timeless luxury. The ambiance is as warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot for special occasions and romantic dinners which is why we booked a reservation for dinner to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary.

The food was clean and well executed. We started with the Burrata (Tomato Marmalade, Basil, Baguette) and The Endive Salad (Bayley Hazen Blue Cheese, Walnuts, Preserved Orange, Golden Raisin). Both dishes were tasty and the blue cheese paired excellently with the Muscadet wine. For mains we both enjoyed Branzino (Roasted Peppers, Tomato Confit, Arugula, Fennel Crisp). While the food was tasty, the treat of dining at Dowling’s is in the service. Our Captain gave exemplary service and attention to detail ensuring that we had a lovely evening to celebrate our anniversary. Our desserts—the Peach Melba (Raspberry Swirl Ice Cream, Tasted Almond) and Flourless Chocolate Cake (Sour Cherry Compote, Crème Chantilly) were served with chocolate anniversary notes and it was as sweet end to a lovely meal.

Fun Fact: The Carlyle Hotel, earned the nickname "the New York White House" due to its strong associations with U.S. presidents and political figures, most notably President John F. Kennedy. During his presidency, JFK maintained an apartment at the Carlyle Hotel. He often used it as a private retreat and hosted numerous events and meetings there. This close association led many to view the hotel as an extension of the White House. Beyond JFK, several other U.S. presidents and dignitaries have stayed at the Carlyle, further solidifying its reputation as a political hub. For instance, Presidents Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Bill Clinton have been among its distinguished guests.

Due to these factors, the Carlyle became affectionately known as "the New York White House," symbolizing its role as a secondary seat of presidential activity away from Washington, D.C.
