NYC Charm: Tavern on the Green, Central Park

NYC Charm: Tavern on the Green, Central Park

Tavern on the Green

Address | W 67th St, New York, NY 10023

Tavern on the Green, the historic restaurant located in Central Park, New York City is where we hosted our wedding luncheon 5 years ago! It’s hard to believe that much time has passed but we’ve loved each moment along the way. We returned to celebrate our anniversary and give our readers a review on this iconic NYC spot.

Originally built in 1870 as a sheepfold housing sheep that grazed in the park, it was transformed into a restaurant in 1934 under the direction of New York City Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. Tavern on the Green has a storied history and has become an iconic dining spot, beloved by both locals and tourists. The restaurant's architecture and design reflect its original Victorian Gothic style, with additions made over the years to enhance its charm. It has an elegant and inviting atmosphere with a combination of indoor and outdoor seating, including a beautiful garden area that offers a picturesque setting, especially in the warmer months.

The menu at Tavern on the Green is a reflection of modern American cuisine, with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients and classic dishes with contemporary twists. The restaurant offers brunch, lunch, and dinner, featuring dishes like roasted chicken, seared salmon, and a variety of salads and appetizers. They also have a selection of desserts and an extensive wine list to complement the meals.

We started with the Honey Roasted Figs (Laura Chenel Goat Cheese, Honey-White Balsamic Dressing, Air Cured Beef, Baby Arugula) and the Summer Tomato Panzanella Salad (Vine Ripened Tomatoes, Toasted Garlic Bread, Avocado, Arugula, Shaved Red Onions, Light Tomato Vinaigrette). The goat cheese was creamy and deliciously paired with the sweet figs. For our mains we selected the Salmon Burger (Cilantro Fennel Salad, Sweet Potato Fries, Chili Aioli) and the Roasted Cauliflower Steak (Curried Cauliflower Puree`, Quinoa, Pomegranate Syrup). As you can see in the photos the cauliflower steak is huge and we have left overs that will last another round or two (planning to toss into salads). The salmon and hand cut sweet potato fries were really tasty, a nice American style lunch.

We capped our meal off with the Bing Cherry Crème Brûlée (Cherry Pistachio Biscotti) and were pleasantly surprised with a Slice of 'Birthday Cake' (Confetti Layer Cake, Served With Ice Cream) with a sweet anniversary message.
