While it wasn’t exactly ideal beach weather in Portugal in late February, we were strongly encouraged to take advantage of our rental car to head out about 30 minutes from Porto to visit the beach at Matosinhos. As I’ve mentioned a time or two, pizza is one of my favorite foods so I was happy to find that Matosinhos is home to Pizzeria Antonio Mezzero. Antonio Mezzero—an Italian native who moved his pizza operation to Matosinhos— is the one time winner of the prestigious World Pizza Championship so I was excited to try his pies.

We had a 7:00 p.m. dinner reservation so we first visited the famous beach. It’s a beautiful stretch of soft sand and we watched a beautiful yellow and orange sunset. After our beach walk we had some time to kill and hit up the local supermarket for some drinks and bites to bring back to our apartment.

The dinner service staff at the pizzeria were very nice and professional. We ordered house wine and limoncello spritzers. The large pies are very large so order only if you have an appetite. We had a pepperoni pizza and of course the classic Margherita pizza. Overall the pizza was really tasty. The crust had some nice airy pockets. In traditional Neapolitan style the dough was softer in the center but in my option a little too doughy. If you enjoy pizza it’s a good pie but not necessarily worth going out of your way. Also, this is one of the few restaurants we came across that really priced at a “tourist” level and the pies were pricey.

It was nice to visit Matosinhos and try something new.
